YAKIMA — Holiday drinking and holiday driving should be separate activities.

If they’re not, extra officers will be on the road starting today to look for impaired driving, whether by drugs or alcohol. Patrols will continue through Jan. 1.

The Grandview, Moxee, Selah, Sunnyside, Toppenish, Union Gap, Wapato and Yakima police departments, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol will use grant-funded overtime for the emphasis patrols.

The effort is organized by the Yakima County Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force. The grant money comes through the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission.

The campaign has for years operated under the slogan, “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed.” That’s changing this year to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
