YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima police are conducting an intense manhunt for a 22-year-old man suspected in the fatal shooting of a Prosser man last Friday.

Angel Fabian Venegas Jr. is wanted in connection with the death of 26-year-old Joshua Mathis, whose body was found Friday evening in the parking lot behind the Red Apple Motel.

Officers swarmed a section of a neighborhood behind the Clarion Hotel, off North First Street, Monday night, following up on a tip that Venegas was in the area.

Mathis died from injuries that included a gunshot to the head, authorities said. His was the second fatal shooting in Yakima in less than 24 hours. Early the same day, a man was shot to death after a dispute over a game of pool at the Brews and Cues tavern in downtown Yakima. Two suspects have been arrested in that case.

Capt. Rod Light said the Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes federal agents as well as local police, were on the hunt Tuesday for Venegas.
