MATTAWA, Wash. — A 16-year-old girl from Mattawa was hurt early Sunday when the car she was riding in rolled over when the driver swerved to avoid hitting a coyote, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The accident occurred about 12:50 a.m. on a remote stretch of State Route 24 west of the Vernita Bridge, about 42 miles east of Yakima.
According to the State Patrol, Patricia Mendoza, 28, of Mattawa was driving east in a 1999 Honda Accord when she swerved to avoid striking the coyote.
Her passenger, Karen Tamayo, 15, also of Mattawa, was injured and taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland. She was treated and released.
Mendoza was wearing a seat belt, but Tamayo was not, according to the State Patrol.
