NACHEs, Wash . — Crews have started clearing Chinook Pass, hoping to reopen the scenic route in time for Memorial Day.
The state Department of Transportation announced Monday that work started Thursday following an assessment last week.
The pass has about 18 feet of snow at the summit, which the department says is about average.
It’s too early to forecast the opening date. The earliest was April 5, 1973; the latest was July 12, 1974.
The pass closed Nov. 12 due to typical winter conditions, including avalanche risk, that make plowing and travel too risky.
