YAKIMA, Wash. — The Boy Scouts gave their annual Yakima Good Scout Award to community leaders John and Mary Place at a breakfast event Tuesday morning.

The scout’s Grand Columbia Council, which serves Central Washington, gives the award to honor adults in the community whose strong character, ethics and leadership makes them important role models for youth.

“John and Mary are shining examples of what we work to instill with our Cub and Boy Scouts,” said Scout Executive Walter Mueller in a statement. “They truly live by the ‘Scout Law.’ ”

The breakfast was a fundraiser for the scouting organization in Yakima and Kittitas counties. More than 1,200 local families participated in programs last year, including camps and service projects.

Motivational speaker and Boy Scout supporter Terry Fossum gave the keynote address.
