— The Grant County Public Utility District will accelerate repairs to boat launches in the Wanapum reservoir, taking advantage of low waters ordered after a crack was discovered in the Wanapum Dam.

Grant PUD commissioners voted Tuesday to conduct an abbreviated bidding period for repairs on the Kittitas boat launch and Frenchman Coulee boat launch, which are both well above the water line because of the drawdown made necessary by the discovery of the crack.

The work, including dredging, shoreline excavations, concrete ramp installation and slope stabilization, was already scheduled. The cost savings of doing the work under the low-water conditions is estimated at $425,000, according to a PUD news release.

A crack was found in one of the dam’s spillway pier monoliths Feb. 27. It ran the length of the 65-foot structure, measuring 2 inches at its widest spot. A March 4 engineering study found the crack had closed. An investigation into its cause continues.

The Wanapum shoreline remains closed during the low-water conditions because of safety hazards.
