Central Washington Sen. Janéa Holmquist Newbry, R-Moses Lake, has removed her name from the Majority Coalition Caucus’s website to protest recent decisions by the majority’s more moderate leaders, The Seattle Times reports.
Holmquist Newbry is the first of at least three Republican senators who plan to remove their names from the website, although they told the Times the move is purely symbolic and they will officially remain with the caucus. The other two are Sens. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, and Pam Roach, R-Auburn.
The senators are particularly upset with the decision by the Majority Coalition Caucus, which is made up of 24 Republicans and two Democrats, to pass their own version of the state Dream Act two weeks ago. The bill makes undocumented residents who meet certain criteria eligible for state financial aid and proposes an additional $5 million in funding for the grant program.
Holmquist Newbry is keeping her picture on the Senate Republican Caucus website.
