— A 29-year-old man was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Tuesday night after the truck he was driving rear-ended a semi-truck westbound on Interstate 82 near Yakima Avenue, according to a news release from Washington State Patrol.

Austin Sierra was driving a 1997 Chevrolet pickup around 6:15 p.m. when he crashed into a 2006 Kenworth tractor, which had slowed down due to traffic congestion, according to the release. A sedan about 100 yards away that had flipped over on the side of the highway contributed to the congestion, the State Patrol said.

Sierra is in serious condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The driver of the semi, Otho Riggs of Ellensburg was not injured and was able to drive the truck from the scene, according to the release.

The truck driven by Sierra was totaled and impounded. He is expected to be charged with negligent driving, according to the State Patrol. They do not believe alcohol was a factor.
