YAKIMA — A new family-owned dollar store opened Saturday at a space once partially occupied by Blockbuster Video.

The Dollar Stretcher store at 501 W. Lincoln Ave. had a good turnout with the parking lot full for much of the day. “We had a lot of people waiting” when the store opened at 8 a.m., said co-owner Jenny Kim.

True to its name, most of the 5,000 or so items at the 9,300-square-foot store are a dollar. Just about all items, which include houehold items, toys and food items, are priced below $10.

The store plans to have new items every few weeks, Kim said. She believes that being a locally-owned store will enable the store to better respond to customer demand.

“We have what people need,” she said.

Hours for the store are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
