When the weather outside is frightful, make these delightful — and delicious — hot drinks that will warm your house and your mood.

Classic Hot Cocoa

(Adapted from Hershey)

Throw out the packets of hot chocolate mix and go back to the original: creamy with real chocolate flavor.

- 1/2 cup sugar

- 1/4 cup cocoa

- dash salt

- 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

- 3 cups milk

- 1 cup half & half

- 1/3 cup water

Add sugar, cocoa and salt in a medium-sized sauce pan. Stir in water and mix well. Boil and stir for a couple minutes. Reduce heat and add milk and cream until well blended, but be careful not to boil. Remove from heat and add vanilla. We like lots of whipped cream on ours, sprinkled with coarse sugar.

Tom ‘N Jerry

(Adapted from Esquire.com)

A nod to the past, this gorgeous drink would be a fun addition to a holiday party. No need for special cups!

- 12 egg(s)

- 1 cup + 1 tablespoon sugar

- 1 bottle brandy

- pinch of ground allspice

- pinch of ground cinnamon

- pinch of ground cloves

- 1 bottle dark rum

- milk

- nutmeg

Separate the eggs and set aside egg whites. Beat egg yolks and 1 cup sugar together until they are quite thin. Add 4 oz. brandy slowly, then add spices. Set aside.

Beat egg whites and 1 tablespoon sugar until stiff. Mix 3/4 of the egg whites into the yolk mixture, reserving the rest.

When ready to serve, put one tablespoon of the egg batter into each cup and add 1 oz. brandy or rum (some prefer both). Fill to the top with hot milk and top with beaten egg whites.

A Grown-up Eggnog Latte

(Adapted from thefreshmarket.com)

IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYBODY IS CRAZY over eggnog lattes these days, so why not make one yourself? Adding bourbon makes it a grown-up treat.

- 2 cups eggnog

- 1 tablespoon light rum

- 1 tablespoon bourbon

- 1 cup espresso, brewed

- ground nutmeg

- whipped cream (optional)

Mix brewed espresso (or really, really strong coffee) with rum and bourbon. Heat or steam eggnog and add to coffee mixture. Top with whipped cream and nutmeg.

Hot Apple Cider Rum

(Adapted from browneyedbaker.com)

Make the house smell like the holidays with a large pot of apple cider rum simmering away on the stove. Perfect for large groups.

- 8 cups apple cider

- 1 apple, sliced

- 1 orange, sliced

- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced

- 2 cinnamon sticks

- 2 cups dark rum

Combine all ingredients in a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for at least five minutes. Remove from heat and stir in rum (can do this as each drink is served).

Hot Toddy

(Adapted from sippitysup.com)

A Hot Toddy serves dual purposes, since it’s not only a delicious cold-weather drink, but some folks swear by its healing powers for a cold or flu.

- 2 cups water

- 2 tablespoons honey

- 2 shots bourbon

- 2 teaspoons lemon juice

- 2 bags black tea

- 2 lemon slices (optional)

Bring water to near a boil. Get two mugs and spoon a tablespoon of honey into each. Add half the bourbon and lemon juice to each mug. Once the water reaches near boiling, put a teabag into each mug and fill with water. Let steep for about a minute, remove teabag and garnish with lemon slice.
