In this week’s edition of Open Mike, agriculture reporter Dave Lester talks about the Yakima Basin Enhancement Project with host Mike Faulk.

The proposal, an effort to increase water storage for agriculture while enhancing conservation and fish passage, has gained momentum in recent years, and Lester has followed the story closely.

Gov. Jay Inslee and several local legislators are pushing for a bill (House Bill 1196) which would direct the Department of Ecology to move forward with additional storage at Bumping Lake and Wymer in the Yakima River Canyon.

The bill includes directives for creating fish ladders and other conservation efforts at existing dams as well as the purchase of private land to improve fish runs and protect the watershed.

During each Open Mike segment, Faulk will speak with a Herald-Republic staff member to gain his or her perspective on a particular newsworthy event or an aspect of the newsroom operation. Each segment will be available by noon Wednesday at
