YAKIMA, Wash. — A 13-year-old boy was injured Monday afternoon when he was struck by a Yakima police car near Garfield Elementary School.
Police said Jorge Robles was not believed to have been seriously injured, although he was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The accident happened about 2:20 p.m. near Sixth and Jerome avenues. Police said Sgt. Mike Henne, a 17-year veteran of the department, was driving south on North Sixth Avenue when the boy attempted to cross the street.
“Witnesses stated they had seen Robles running south along the east sidewalk and then onto the road, attempting to cross to the west, when he ran directly into the path of Sergeant Henne’s vehicle,” according to a news release issued by the police department.
Police said Henne stopped immediately and began rendering first aid.
Robles was transported to the hospital “with injuries to his right side which were not considered to be serious in nature,” the news release said.
The Yakima Police Department Traffic Unit is conducting an investigation.
