YAKIMA, Wash . — On Open Mike today, Yakima Herald-Republic reporter Dan Catchpole discusses the eviction of as many as 200 residents of the downtown Cascade and Senator apartments Friday as a result of building code violations.
After first being warned seven months ago, the buildings’ owner seems to be making progress on repairing numerous defects, but city officials say they don’t think the repairs will be finished before the noon Friday deadline.
Yakima County officials and low-income housing advocates trying to find temporary housing for the residents say they’ve never dealt with such a large number in such a short time. One county official called the job “almost impossible.”
Open Mike is a Web broadcast that takes you inside the Herald-Republic newsroom, where reporter Mike Faulk speaks with other members of the staff to gain their perspectives on a newsworthy event or an aspect of the newsroom operation.
Each segment will be available by noon Wednesday at yakimaherald.com.
