ZILLAH, Wash. — School and police officials in Zillah have scheduled a community meeting to discuss safety issues following the Newtown, Conn., school shooting last week.
The Jan. 23 meeting, set for 6 p.m. at the Zillah High School Performing Arts Center, 1602 Second Ave., will address school and community safety, officials said in a notice released Thursday. Parents and other residents are invited to attend.
Last Friday, Zillah officers were stationed at Zillah schools in response to vague threats made on Facebook by a Zillah man. The man has since been taken into custody.
Zillah officers are now expected to have a greater presence on local campuses, and officials say other steps are also being taken to increase students’ safety, including better securing schools, reviewing emergency plans and educating students and staff about current safety concerns.
