Democrats got back at Republicans in the state House Wednesday by proposing a “training wage” for freshmen legislators. The prank bill was clearly aimed at Rep. Matt Manweller, R-Ellensburg, who supports a Republican proposal to establish a special training certificate that allows employers to pay new employees 75 percent of the minimum wage.

Manweller, a freshman, wasn’t laughing.

“Democratic control in Washington has resulted in 17 percent unemployment rates for white youth in our state and a staggering 37 percent unemployment rate for African-American youth. Now, as Republicans try to clean up the mess their union-dominated policies have created, they offer nothing but symbolic resolutions,” he said in a news release.

“I am sure it is a tongue-in-cheek gesture, but tell that to the unemployed youth who want to have a job. I think this stunt shows their economic ignorance.”
