It’s a good weekend for music around here.

If you’re into slick, big-time mainstream country, there’s the Carrie Underwood show at the Yakima Valley SunDome. If you’re into something a bit more low-key with an alt-country bent, there’s Katy Lin of Katy Lin and the Moonlight Riders at Gilbert Cellars on Friday. If for some reason you’ve always wondered what Billy Joel would sound like with a full orchestra, there’s “The Piano Men: The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John” at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday. If you like freaky, looped dance beats there’s Tony Smiley at the Yakima Sports Center on Friday. For killer bar rock there’s Guns of Nevada at Prosody Events in Ellensburg on Saturday. And for hard rock bordering on metal there’s Witchburn at Bill’s Place on Saturday. And for a new voice on the local singer-songwriter scene there’s Heather Simmons at North Town Coffeehouse on Friday.

Of all of those, Katy Lin is probably my favorite. She’s a country-blues artist in the vein of maybe Lucinda Williams or Neko Case. (Check out some video of her here.) Plus that show is free. It starts at 7 p.m. at Gilbert, 5 N. Front St. For information call 509-249-9049.

I’m making her my On Blog Top Pick of the Week, which is a new thing we’re doing around here. So look for blog posts to that effect each Thursday. And to sign up for text notification for future On Blog Top Picks of the Week, visit www.yakimaherald.com/text.
