Despite near 100-degree temperatures well into the evening, I had to go to Downtown Summer Nights on Thursday; Planes on Paper are one of the best local bands in years, and Vaudeville Etiquette out of Seattle are a definite new favorite.

Neither band disappointed. Nor did opener Shane Alexander out of Los Angeles, who I saw open for the Cave Singers when they came to Yakima last year.

It was pretty well-attended, too, given the heat. But that’s not surprising. Four hours of free music is always a good deal.

I shot some video (click on it and watch), so you can get an idea of what the weekly concert series is like. Next Thursday it’ll be local boys The Common Deer with a pair of Seattle bands, Whiskey Syndicate and McTuff. It’s always free, and it’s always from 5 to 9 p.m. on Fourth Street between Chestnut Street and Yakima Avenue. For information visit www.downtownsummernights.com.
