Lots of good music in the Yakima Valley this weekend, but the show I’m most looking forward to is Red Jacket Mine at the Yakima Sports Center on Saturday.

The Ancients, opening for The Fail Safe Project at Bill’s Place on Friday, are a solid metal band. And there’s plenty of good acts in Ellensburg as the Kittitas County Fair starts up, including The Dusty 45s and Cody Beebe and The Crooks tonight. But Red Jacket Mine is this week’s On Blog pick of the week. You just don’t see many bands who can do catchy straightforward pop-rock like these guys can. There’s a groove to it, too, especially on the keyboard heavy numbers. It’s almost bubblegum pop, but in the very best way.

Check out their video for “Somebody Else’s Cake,” a clear homage to Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up” video.

They’re at the Yakima Sports Center, 214 E. Yakima Ave., with openers The Deadbeat Drag, starting at 9 p.m. It’s free.
