The recent warm spring weather is enabling Mount Rainier National Park crews to open a lot of areas that in some years wouldn’t have opened for another couple of weeks.
White River Campground, a population destination for folks from this side of the mountains, will open this Friday (June 28). Also opening Friday will be Sunrise Road and Sunrise Lodge; at 6,400 feet, Sunrise is the highest point in the park that you can drive to.
Sunrise Visitor Center will open next Wednesday, on the eve of the Fourth of July. This is a change from the park’s original announcement, which indicated it would be opening on Friday.
Cougar Rock Campground, just off Paradise Road on the way up to Paradise, opened today.
Mowich Lake Road is also scheduled to open next Wednesday; the parking lot is clear there, there’s still about three feet of snow and the lake, while melting out, is still frozen in places. Trail routes may be a bit difficult to find.
Ohanapecosh is already open.
Note: This post was updated to include the park’s change to the Sunrise opening.
