From checks submitted by grown-ups to the coins from a boy’s piggy bank, about 200 Yakima-area runners and walkers contributed more than $4,100 to benefit victims of the Boston Marathon bombings during Saturday’s fun run/walk at the Yakima Greenway.
The event was put on by the Hard Core Runners group of Yakima, which will donate the money to OneFundBoston, the designated charity to aid those affected by the bombings. The $4,100 raised does not include local donations made directly through the OneFundBoston.org site, but does include one heartwarming gift — the $11.80 contributed by a young boy who donated the contents of his piggy bank.
Before the 2.62-mile run — one-tenth the marathon distance — six Yakima Valley residents who completed this year’s Boston Marathon were introduced to the participants.
Anyone wishing to donate may do so directly to OneFundBoston.org.
