YAKIMA, Wash. — Jovino Santos Neto is for real.

He’s a three-time Latin Grammy nominee, which means something, I guess. But, infinitely more impressive is Santos Neto’s long association with Hermeto Pascoal, a towering figure in Brazilian musical history (and, if I’m being completely honest, one of the only figures in Brazilian musical history who even know-nothing guys like me have heard of). Santos Neto played in Pascoal’s band for years, which means he spent years playing with the man Miles Davis called “the most impressive musician in the world.”

Yeah, so, like I was saying, Jovino Santos Neto is for real. (If you still don’t believe me, watch this.)

And he’s playing a free show at Gilbert Cellars from 7 to 10 p.m. today. That’s after he spends the day working with music students in the Highland and West Valley school districts. (Lucky students.)

Gilbert is at 5 N. Front St. For information visit www.gilbertcellars.com or www.jovisan.net or call 509-0249-9049.
