YAKIMA, Wash. — The Michaels store in Yakima has announced its relocation to the Valley Mall Plaza in Union Gap on its readerboard, but those at the craft store’s corporate headquarters in Texas aren’t ready to confirm the move.
But there’s no doubt that the move seems highly anticipated. A photo I posted Monday on Shop Talk’s Facebook page of the Michaels readerboard generated more than 1,400 views on the Shop Talk Facebook page or through various reshares of the post.
Michaels is expected to go in the former Borders space. Borders closed in 2011 after the Michigan-based company filed for bankruptcy earlier that year. Valley Mall owner CenterCal Plaza had dropped hints over the years regarding potential tenants for the space, but the readerboard is the most official news we have at this point.
Among those who saw my Facebook post is Michelle Lara, who was a long-time manager of the Borders store.
Lara is now manager of Pier 1 Imports, which is also in the Valley Mall Plaza.
“Happy to see something finally going into my bookstore’s hollow shell,” Lara commented on the Facebook post. “RIP Borders. Welcome to the neighborhood, Michaels.”
